Transformative Support with the ITC Program
The Invitation to Change (ITC) program is a compassionate, science-based approach designed to help loved ones support someone struggling with substance use or other problematic behaviors. It combines elements of Motivational Interviewing (MI), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT) to empower families and friends to encourage positive change.
Key Benefits of ITC:
- Encourages Positive Communication – Helps loved ones communicate in a way that promotes openness, reduces defensiveness, and fosters change.
- Reduces Conflict & Stress – Focuses on reducing blame, guilt, and confrontation, creating a more supportive and peaceful environment.
- Emphasizes Self-Care – Recognizes the importance of caring for oneself while helping someone else.
- Provides Practical Skills – Offers evidence-based strategies for reinforcing positive behavior and managing challenges effectively.
- Promotes Lasting Change – Encourages motivation and behavior change without force or coercion.
- Improves Relationships – Strengthens connections between loved ones, fostering trust and understanding.
- Adaptable & Compassionate – Focuses on flexibility and kindness rather than rigid rules or ultimatums.
How is ITC Different from Other Support Groups?
An ITC group is not a psychotherapy group or a general support group. It also differs from well-known peer-led supports like the 12 Step Fellowship programs (e.g., Al-Anon, Nar-Anon) and the SMART Recovery Family and Friends program. While the latter focuses on cognitive-behavioral principles and includes elements of CRAFT, ITC integrates these techniques with a unique emphasis on blending scientific methods with compassion.
The ITC program is designed to provide members with specific, actionable strategies through topic driven discussions. These discussions introduce skills and new perspectives aimed at prompting change in personal and family dynamics. The approach is built on a foundation of evidence-based practices known for their effectiveness in fostering positive change. Each session focuses exclusively on these principles, ensuring that participants can directly apply what they learn to improve their situations.
